CIRS triple biopsy Phantom (CIRS 051)
The vendor of this Phantom is , Computerized Imaging Reference Systems, Incorporated (CIRS) (http://www.cirsinc.com). The model was discontinued. The replacement product is CIRS 073.
The Triple-Modality Breast Biopsy Training Phantom CIRS 051 can be imaged with Ultrasound, MRI, and X-ray mammography.
It is approximately breast shape and, according to CIRS, mimicks closely the the properties of the human breast and can be used for training of imaging or biopsies. CIRS states that the pantoms “simulate (…) an average 50% glandular breast (BR-12 equivalent) under x-ray, ultrasound, and MRI”.
Specifications:
SIZE: 500 cc, LENGTH: 12 cm, WIDTH: 10 cm, HEIGHT: 9 cm, MATERIAL: Zerdine® ( solid-elastic water-based polymer)
with dense masses of 2 to 8 mm in diameter and cystic masses of 3 to 10 mm in Diameter
Possible advantages for USCT systems:
– Can be imaged from all directions
– Comparison of resulting images to images of other modalities possible
Some possibly disadvantageous properties to keep in mind :
– Distribution of masses is different for each phantom (e.g. MRI as ground truth necessary)
– Does not keep very long
– US properties of materials are not exactly known
Measured properties by KIT group of mainbody made from Zerdine®:
– Speed of sound 1457 m/s +/- 7 m/s
– Attenuation 0.6 dB/cm/MHz +/- 0.2 dB/cm/MHz
